This preprint describes the protocol for a systematic review and meta-analysis evaluating the efficacy and safety of antidepressants for the treatment of low back pain and osteoarthritis. The review protocol was originally submitted to the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (PROSPERO) on November 14 2019. At the time of the protocol submission, the review had not started yet. Electronic database searches were formally conducted on 15 November 2019, after we received an acknowledgement of receipt email (Appendix 3).
In correspondence with PROSPERO on April 9 2020, we were advised that PROSPERO staff were dealing with an unprecedented demand of systematic review protocols, and that COVID-19-related protocols were being given priority (Appendix 4). As a result, review protocol submissions outside the UK were expected to take longer than five months to be processed.
Following PROSPERO’s suggestion, we decided to deposit the review protocol on Open Science Framework as a preprint. This document contains the systematic review protocol originally registered on PROSPERO (Appendix 2) and evidence that confirms that the protocol was prospectively registered.
